Loose Threads — Press —

The language arts as a medium for weaving the social fabric of our world.

What we
believe.

We honour the messy, unfinished, and flawed ongoingness of art. Against the perfection of the finely wrought, we value work with gaps that hold a place to enter.

Our press is a home to literary forms that are uneven, tentative, playful, incohesive, strange, menopausal, queer, uncontained. A fountain pen exploded on the page as we took notes. Our writing is always interrupted — by children we love, by domestic labour, unwaged, by waged labour, unloved, by news feeds, by anxiety, by illness, by crises personal and global — our messy lives smear across the pulped fibres upon which we document our story in jagged words and inky spills, in what overflows our expressive containers.

A notebook page turned on its side, covered in pink and purple ink blooms; sideways red handwriting reads 'everything exceeds containers' across the page.
From the notebook · everything exceeds containers

We believe the language arts are a medium for weaving the social fabric of our world. We learn together through story, poetry, conversation, gossip — connecting writers to readers, empowering everyone to think of themselves as both.

The cycle.

Our work moves in a circle: from workshop to publication to launch, and back to workshop again, with reading clubs that gather around each new book.

i. Workshop

Where the book begins.

Workshops on zines, autoethnographic prose poetry, manifesto writing, editing for publication. Some at the Feminist Research Lab on the UW campus, some at pop-up sessions in your local cafe. Crafting supplies, a sewing machine, and knitting needles always on hand. Tired of words? Make a collage.

ii. Publication

Limited-run editions, built for exchange.

Experimental poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction in beautifully made limited-run editions. A portion of every year's titles is by emerging writers. The single author is the starting point — the first runner in the relay; the manuscript is a baton passed to the next writer.

iii. Reading Club

The next set of writers, learning together.

With each publication, we host reading club gatherings to deepen engagement and invite reader responses in the form of more writing. The reading club is not an audience for the author; it is the next set of writers learning their craft in public.

You're invited.

  • Take a workshop on making zines and whatever you make goes in our zine library.
  • Take a workshop on autoethnographic prose poetry and have it published in a Loose Threads anthology.
  • Don't want to make the trip to campus? Find us at a pop-up workshop at your local cafe.
  • Just want to sew a quilt square instead of writing? Help yourself.

Principles for Surviving the Collapse of Capitalism

Our first book.

Principles for Surviving the Collapse of Capitalism is a collaboratively authored book that began as a reading group on Timothy Snyder's On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons for the Twentieth Century and grew, over a series of creative writing workshops, into a counter-set of lessons for our current moment — written from a feminist, queer, anti-racist, and disability justice point of view.

We will launch the book in July 2026 with an interactive event at Inter Arts Matrix in Kitchener. You are invited.
